this pretty one from the story Even If

Written by: Badi’e Khairy

This pretty one rose early to knead the dough.

At the crack of dawn, with the rooster's crow.

Let's get going, working folk;

Good morning to you, Usta* Atteyah!

Morning has found us as broke as can be.

None is more broke than you guys and me.

Our long-time patience cannot last.

What else to say, no work, no pay.

You who have the money, know

that we poor folk are in His glow.

The folks in Europe do not sleep,

working away by night and by day;

Chasing the penny with all their might

while money down here is tighter than tight.

We're Jacks of all trades but wretched and burdened.

We've asked for your help but you never softened.

Man up Abu* Salah, don’t give a hoot;

Come what may, your day will be okay.

Keep your faith in Allah; let’s go chase the day.

The sun is up and Allah reigns supreme.

Grab that toolbox, let's get going;

Earn our living and leave the rest to Him.
